SARA JANE PALMER         CERAMIC SCULPTURE

I am an artist making sculptural ceramics from my studio near Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, North East England.   I work with the human form - I make heads, figures, wall-hangings, vessels and dishes.  My ideas are from many places; classical sculpture, masks, Benin bronzes, Picasso, mediaeval art, icons, folk art, other representations of the human face.  Landscape,  the patterns man creates by living on the surface of this beautiful world, the alchemical changes that happen to clays and glazes in the mysterious heat of the kiln are endlessly fascinating.

There’s such a range of possible effects – brilliant, lustrous raku, low fired smoked earthenware, colourful slips, speckled salt firing, the high fired translucence of beautiful bone china.  Ceramics can be three dimensional, two dimensional, representational, abstract, practical, and so expressive.

See my Exhibitions page for detail of where you can see my work.  Contact me if you would like to discuss a commission.
